Experience

I am a serious, systems-led English studies and legal studies tutor. My teaching experience is extensive and my qualifications high. My sessions operate at two levels: the orthographic (technical) and the social (cultural and political). I have found this approach makes for a holistic educational experience, the likes of which are rare. METHODOLOGY I will teach you how to write grammatical sentences using the best grammar and style guides set to print -- all the while offering my own interpretations of them. I will explain to you the English language, and its myriad grammatical infelicities, as it should have been explained to you already. I will instruct you in the cultural and social codes that underlie the literary traditions. These are those same codes that continue to inform the ways in which HSC markers and teachers discriminate between students' levels of intelligence in this discipline (even if they're not always aware of doing so), and which so often remain enigmatic to students. I will engage with you and your work in a detailed and forensic manner, bringing to every clause my critical scrutiny as an academic editor, my wisdom as a master's-level teacher, and my insight as an early-career academic, so as to refine and enhance every sentence you commit to paper. FOR LAW STUDENTS I will function primarily as a research and exposition instructor, but adapt as needed so as to highlight your strengths and assuage your weaknesses. I will also determine your motivation focus (whether you have a promotion focus or prevention focus), adopting methods endorsed by the contemporary psychology research of motivation and focus, in order to enable you to commit to and complete tasks more effectively. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY I see the teaching process as a symbiotic one. For me, the one-to-one tutorial setting represents a complex interlocution: the meeting of two eager and equally valid minds. For this reason, I feel I am a picky tutor, and urge only serious and highly motivated academic students to contact me. I intend to personally tutor no more than five students at any one time. I am not a religious person; however, I am happy to admit that my educational philosophy bears the influence of an adage of which the Jesuits seem fond: "cura personalis," care for the whole person. I am more generally an exponent of the liberal humanist tradition, and will urge you to incorporate your identity into your work, howsoever you wish to forge it. This makes your work rewarding, and is an element of my teaching that probably bears the influence on me of one of my heroes, the French philosopher Michel Foucault. I have tutored scholars at all adult levels: from master's students, to undergraduate University Medalists, to prize-winning and state-topping HSC students. In education, I take as my personal motto the phrase Aun Aprendo: "I am always learning."
