Education

I scored a 6 on my HSK (Mandarin Chinese Proficiency Test) and also hold a Certificate in Advanced Chinese Language from Beijing's Tsinghua University. I earned a bachelor's degree in International Studies (Asian Studies) and Mandarin from the University of New South Wales.

Experience

I have been tutoring Mandarin Chinese and English for the past eight years. My day job requires me to deal with colleagues and clients in China, so my Chinese skills are constantly being reinforced. I also worked for two years in Beijing, allowing me to completely immerse myself in the Chinese language and culture. Learning Chinese can feel daunting if you're a native English speaker. How do tones work? How do you remember all of those characters? What about all of the dialects spoken in China? I grew up in Australia and distinctly remember asking those questions, but now I am fluent in Chinese reading, writing, and listening. The trick is not relying on rote memorization. I will make you a "cheat sheet" of tips, tricks, and hints to help you master the nuances and bones of this complex, diverse language. I have proven experience passing these tips on to students. Whether you are someone studying Mandarin at university to achieve fluency, a student at primary or secondary school, or someone who just wants to learn the nuts and bolts of Mandarin to give you that edge in your business dealings, I am here to help.

Hobbies

Since I was a child, I have maintained three hobbies. The first is politics. I remember when I was young, I used to tape Question Time on the ABC, before smart TV was around, and race home after school to catch up on the latest from the Senate or the House of Reps. The second is music. I have played the saxophone and piano since a young age, in jazz groups and big bands, and this has evolved into a pursuit of music in my spare time as a young adult. I currently sing and play the saxophone in a band, and enjoy playing gigs on the weekends. My third interest is languages. During high school, I studied German (which has become a little rusty), and decided to pursue Mandarin as a minor at university. I studied and worked in China for more than four years. More recently, I have pursued studies in Spanish, and I love attending Spanish lessons on weekends and participating in cultural activities with Sydney's Spanish speaking community on weekends.
