Hamdy A.

Private tutor in Sydney, Australia

Education

I hold a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and PhD in Mechanical Engineering. My PhD was awarded in 2023 and was jointly supervised with the University of Sydney. My academic and research background includes extensive experience and expertise in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, combustion and energy systems. My PhD research focused on combustion, energy and the formation of nanoparticles in combustion flames.

Experience

I have more than 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience across high school, undergraduate and postgraduate education, including more than 10 years teaching engineering students at the University of Sydney. Over the years, I have worked with students from a wide range of academic backgrounds, both in Australia and internationally. My university teaching experience includes Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Power Plant Technology, Energy Resources and other Mechanical Engineering subjects. I have taught students from Aerospace, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Civil, Electrical, Biomedical and Chemical Engineering backgrounds. I have also provided private tutoring to students from universities across Australia and to students based in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and other countries. I have extensive experience teaching Mathematics to high school students and have worked as a high school Mathematics teacher at a highly regarded independent school in Sydney. I also have recent first-hand experience with English-language study and standardised English proficiency testing. I achieved an IELTS Academic Overall Band 8.0, with 8.5 in Listening, 8.0 in Reading and 8.5 in Speaking. This experience allows me to provide practical support with IELTS preparation, academic English and developing confidence in English-language study. Over more than two decades, I have helped hundreds of students overcome difficulties in subjects they initially found challenging, prepare for assessments and examinations, address gaps in their knowledge and, most importantly, develop confidence in their own abilities. My tutoring approach is based on understanding rather than memorisation. I first identify the areas where a student is struggling and then explain the underlying concepts clearly, using examples and problem-solving strategies appropriate to the student's level. I adapt my approach to each student's academic background, current level of understanding and individual goals, whether they are studying at an Australian university or an institution overseas. I became a tutor because I genuinely enjoy helping students succeed. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing a student move from confusion or lack of confidence to a point where they can approach challenging problems independently and believe in their own ability.

Hobbies

Outside teaching and tutoring, I enjoy reading and listening to audiobooks, particularly when I have some quiet time to relax and learn about new ideas. I also enjoy spending time with my family and maintaining a good balance between my professional and personal life. I enjoy lifelong learning and exploring new subjects, and I believe curiosity is one of the qualities that makes learning rewarding.
